Book Review

The Center of Everything

The Center of Everything by Laura Moriarty. This is a coming of age story of a ten-year-old girl, Evelyn, who lives with her young mother on the outskirts of a small Kansas town. Evelyn, a gifted but underprivileged student, has to deal with the drawbacks of her background to become a college student. This was the kind of book which has to come to an end eventually (the book ends in the summer that Evelyn graduates High School) and I was disappointed that we could not continue on with her adulthood. My only critique is that during her life Evelyn is involved with an Evangelical Church and although the church members touched Evelyn?s life in a good way and helped her and her family, they were portrayed as over-the-top religious fanatics. It would be nice to read a book where Christians are portrayed in a positive light.
