Don't Eat This Book: Fast Food and the Supersizing of America

Book Review by Joyce Ruiz
Don't Eat This BookDon't Eat This Book: Fast Food and the Supersizing of America by Morgan Spurlock If you have not seen the movie, Super Size Me, I highly recommend it! The book is not only filled with facts (usually disgusting), but also very funny. Spurlock describes America's obesity epidemic, its relation to the fast food industry, the industry's relations to U.S. government agencies and how the problem is spreading worldwide.

As we used to work in Los Angeles and Juan had family immediately in the inner-city, I could certainly relate to one portion of Spurlock's book in which he describes fast food on every corner of the inner city and no grocery stores to speak of. He talks about the "neighborhood markets" in the inner-city (and which I can attest to) which sell sodas, junk food, candy -- and if they sell fruits and vegetables at all, they are wilted and semi-rotten.

Although the statistics he quotes are bleak, Spurlock's jokes make it easier to read this book and share facts with children, co-workers, etc. I'm not saying that everyone should give up eating fast food, but after seeing the movie and reading the book, you might make think twice before eating fast food very often, make wiser choices when ordering, and definitely NOT supersize it!! If you do not want to read the entire book, I would still recommend that you check it out at your library and skim through the book to read any facts which you may find interesting and/or relevant.
